I was lucky to go there within the same day I heard about it..
A street for street food in bengaluru... its in VVPuram close by to Lalbagh west gate..

after a good walk in Lalbagh the tummy was really complaining for some food..

Thindhi beedi was an apt answer for it..

We started from VB Bakery - dum rot & congress buns... Walked till the end of the street to first fill the eyes & mind with the varieties.. so much to savor & eat .. but alas - only one stomach to fill ...

hot obattu, avare bele dosa, masala pav, holige, curd kodubele... and the capsicum bonda garnished with carrot, onion... awesome for the taste buds..

we end it on a high note with hot jilebe, gulkund with fruit salad & icecream , masala pepsi..

rest r on our list for next visit..

more than the delicacies the experience is enjoyable.. no chairs, no one to take orders.. the food is prepared before us & a crowd of fellow foodies...can't ask for more for a Saturday evening..

wish I can eat 'Aayirathil Oruvan' after all the hype & buzz around it. If the entire story is Selvaraghvan's imagination kudos to him on the brave attempt. The first half of the movie was awesome. Cinematography & story line was fantastic. The story plot of archeolgy, search of the long lost last Chozha is totally new. The first half just captivated, engrossed & made feel proud of the director. The twist, turns and the interval - mind blowing.

However the second half failed to hold on to that. The second part of the movie in brief tells the lost Chozha & his famine struck people are longing to go back Thanjai. I felt that the second part was too long with many scenes dragging till the climax. It was lot confusing too which left with many unanswered questions:

If the Chozha's had mystical powers to safeguard themselves why did they use it against the enemies

Everyone is malnourished and why do they deck up Andrea who is supposed to be a prisoner

Their mental power had been amazing that they had envisoned the future, then was it lost in the centuries past by

What is the madness which happens to Karthi, Reema & Andrea during the intermission

It was like breaking a myth/belief that the Chozha's lived in a much more civilised way, women were brave & intelligent. It is hard to digest that they didn't have much strategy against the enemy or cannot safeguard their women and fall down without much grace.

I love to belive that they were (/are) lot better than us. Its hard to accept it any other way.Might it is a myth or not I wish to hold on to that as the truth.

Vellore Weekend Trip: Thiruvalam and Padavedu – Day 2

Vilvanatheeswarar Temple, Thiruvalam (Thiruvallam)

Thiruvalam – the place where lord Ganesha came around their parents and won the mango over his brother.

We reached there early morning. There was a group of children aged around 6 to 12 years singing Siva puranam
under the guidance of an old odhuvar. Old temple, stone flooring, no crowd at all and the children singing very devout. Wow… I wish to wake up ever morning in the same ambience.

Padavedu

Our next destination after breakfast was Padavedu. Padavedu is 30+ kms in the Vellore – Thiruvanamalai road. Follow the straight road from Vellore to Thiruvannamalai, pass by Kannamangalam-Vaazhiyur until Sandhaivasal. In Sandhaivasal turn right until you reach Padavedu.

Padavedu is a small village of banana and paddy fields. All the temples are old temples and amazing to hear that they were buried in sand. Over it the villagers have been cultivating corn until the buried temples were found it in ‘prasannam’ and archeological facts. Hats off to TVS company who have renovated and maintaining these temples. Amazing service they have been doing; all these temples are maintained very clean and daily they give prasadham as a kaingaryam.

We were lucky enough to get to see at least few of these temples. ‘Renuka Paremeswari’ temple is the most famous in this village.

Renuka Parameswari temple

Very famous temple and everyone on the way can direct it to the temple. The temple has a history of Parasuramar and his mom Renuka. Thank you, the temple has a very good signboard on all the temples, short history and opening timings.

Yoga Ramar Temple, Padavedu

The only place lord Rama is not Gothanda Ramar with bow and arrow He is in a meditation pose and has rested here on the request of Renuka Devi. Hanuman has ‘olai chuvadi’ clarifying doubts with Rama. The archagar and the staff are very friendly and passionate in sharing the history.

Sambar saadham and curd rice prasadham.

Veera Anjaneyar Temple, Padavedu

This is a new temple built and we went there hoping that we could request him to visit the ‘Chinna Varadhar’ temple. Though we were not lucky enough as the archagar has just closed the Varadhar temple and he said next time.

Milagau Vadai and curd rice (prasadham from Chinna Varadhar) temple.

Ammayappa Eswarar Temple, Padavedu

Recently renovated from the buried sand and the temple is at a beautiful location facing paddy field. This is the only temple with ‘Abarnambigai’ as the goddess. The name ‘Abarnambigai’ comes in Lalitha Sakasaranamam. In front of the goddess shrine they still have a place from where the idols and jewels of the goddess were recovered.

Curd rice, mixed rice and payasam prasadham.

Chinna Varadhar Temple, Padavedu

We didn’t want to miss the ‘Chinna varadhar’ temple, though it was closed. The temple is hidden in between banana and paddy fields. Watch the path as it might be slippery.

It was an experience to sit on the steps of the closed temple and no human in sight, lush green at any angle you turn the head.

End of day 2 – Wish to go back to Padavedu and visit all the temples and if there’s a chance to stay in that village for a couple of days. A very satisfactory day and the only regret was that we were not in Padavedu early in the morning.

On the route to Padavedu, saw many 'Ayyannar' idols without heads. Is there a story behind it?

Check these for more information on Padavedu:

www.renugambal.com
www.shanthiraju.wordpress.com
www.prabhukrish.net

Vellore Weekend Trip (Pilgrimage?) - Day 1

We packed our bags and left Bangalore on Saturday morning by 7am for our weekend trip to Vellore. After the first stop at Krishnagiri – Adyar Anandha Bhavan for breakfast we drove to Ambur via the fantastic Krishnagiri-Chennai NH.

Kailasagiri Murugan Temple – Gadambur, Ambur

Take the service road towards Ambur and drive straight until you cross a Reliance petrol bunk. Left turn on the road further down (Hotel Amirtham is a landmark) and ask for Kailasagiri, Murugan temple. Follow the road for a 20-30 minutes drive until the board stating Kailasagiri (a police station is immediately next to it).

There’s a patchy road which ends at 990 stairways up the hill to Kailasagiri. We parked our car under the shady neem tree and was encouraged by the old watchman that we could reach top of the hill within 15-25 minutes.

Well I must admit that it was mid summer and thanks to the tress we didn’t feel much heat.

Though I didn’t make beyond 350 stairs, the Mr and mom reached the shrine. As heard from them, it is a small temple surrounded by 7 ponds (on top of a hill !) and the view from the top is beautiful. Only the archagar with the company God and breeze flying thru’ the hair and absolute silence I can imagine that it must have been a divine experience.

Jalagaandeshwara Temple & Vellore fort

We rushed into the Jalagandeshwara temple before it was closed for lunch. Read some where that there was a stream running beneath the moolavar and a secret passage which ended up in Kancheepuram.

As they were closing down, we couldn’t explore the temple much.

Vellore fort, well it was very hot to go out on boating. The park, lake around and the fort was picturesque until you look into the waters. It was a sad feeing to see hundreds of dead fish floating.

Rathnagiri Bala Murugan Temple, Vellore

Our next stop after lunch at the Hotel Aryaas, Vellore (take the left road to Vellore from NH and ask for new bus stand, the hotel is beneath the flyover) was Rathnagiri. Rathnagiri is 15 kms from Vellore on the Vellore-Chennai route. It’s a small hill and you can drive the car up the hill. The temple has been renovated in recent times and become very famous. Sounds interesting to hear about a clerk Murganadimai (which means ‘slave of Lord Muruga’) who got enlightened and vouched to turn the ruined temple to what it is today.

Be aware of the naughty monkeys.

Thanvanthri Bhagavan, Walajapet

Walajapet is approx. 15 kms from Rathnagiri on the Vellore-Chennai route. Drive down till Walajapet bus stand and take the adjacent left road (before the bus stand), sholiyur route.

Thanvanthri is the Dr God, 12th avatar of Lord Perumal. The archagar is a very good orator and possess good marketing skilled and well trained. The Dr God with a steth, operating knife and a naught smile drew me away and made belive what the archagar said. I ended up buying a herbal thayathu (Rs 200), a total healer for any (or all) disease ;-)

Must say the Dr God, Mahishashuramarthini gives a sense of peace with a pleasing smile.

Golden temple, Sripuram

Coffee break @ Durga Bhavan, Vellore (opp. To Hotel Aryaas).

The skies has opened and swept off the summer heat. What a delight to feel the cold evening air after being fried by the sun during the day. Thanks to the rains, a tree has blocked the road to Sripuram and huge traffic jam. We had to park the car well ahead and walk down. The place was too too crowded, may be a thousands were.

Took a special ticket ad had a good evening walk of atleast a 2kms around the temple of gold.

Sorry to say that it was more of a picnic, exhibitional place of gold rather than the sense of divinity. Though the ambigai is strinkingly beautiful, all that glitters around takes away the attention.

End of day we dropped our bags and self at the ‘Millenium Plaza’ hotel in Vellore – Katpaadi road. This hotel had good amenties at reasonable rates. (Rs 800 for a AC room and Rs 500 for non AC.) The rooms were clean with a TV and a water heater in bathrooms.

End of day 1 – The old temples with stone flooring and no tiles or marbles, makes me feel more close to God. Is it because of the upbringing or the mind?

<img width='1' height='1' An amateur photogropher with a great love for photography and an absolute zero on the technicalities or the equipment was how I was. For a while i've been eyeing for a photography class until I came across the 'digital photography workshop' by Kalyan, the Indian wildlife photographer (http://www.kalyanvarma.net/).

The workshop was a boon which came at the right time. The workshop was well organized over a weekend which Kalyan began with the basics of digital photography. Having not experimented much beyond the AUTO mode it was such a fantastic learning experience on the technicalities like aperture, shutter speed, DOF, exposure..

It was a wise thinking that he had the lighter topics of equipment types and maintenance after lunch. A lot of eye openers and the one which needs a special mention is how to maintain the camera. Kalayan was pointing out the SLRs which come now are dust and water prone and there he was pouring water over his 400 mm lens. All the cheaper and easier ways to keep the camera clean was very interesting I would say and few of them took me by surprise.

Though it's been months since I woke up early on a Sunday,by the quench kindled on the previous day I didn't want to be late for the photo shoot in Lalbagh. First time to Lalbagh and on a photo shoot assignment was total fun. Putting into act the technicalities and tricks, looking for ants and wishing they would rest and pose for a macro lens shot.. nothing more could we ask for a hands-on session.

The day went on with the post processing and review of the morning session shots. click.. click - its' not the end.. hold on and there's much more to make a nice photograph.. the post processing tools and what can be done, what is not acceptable, the small tips and tricks - all were discussed in the post processing session.. All in all the session was a complete one from a passionate man who added more to the love for photography.

All the video clippings, photographs and the stories around them were very interesting..

Now I cannot wait for this weekend Pondicherry trip to play with my camera....

What is a blog on photography without an image attached to it ;-)

(One of my clicks from Lalbagh without any post processing.)

Control - to what extent?

On the street and a km away from home, the urinary bladder is full till the tip.
Too sick and physically unfit to drive the car on own or take an auto.
The purse is empty ruling out the option of calling a city taxi. Why can't a sensible man of high calibre realise that because of these long hours his day is shortened, leavng no time for a walk or a talk? All the news channel show the same words, pictures and footage only via different people. Nothing will change over nite. Located at the foothills of the Nilgris, Masinagudi is a small village amidst the Mudumalai forest, national park and whatsoever. The Bangalore-Mysore-Nanjagund-Gundelpet-Bandipur-Mudumalai-Theppakadu-Doddilingi-Masinagudi is around 250 kms. Being told that the climate was very pleasant we packed our winter lotions and sweaters. However when we reached Mysore from Bangalore, we were wondering if we should have packed some sunscreen lotion too. The roads until Gundalpet are okay, thanks to the SH17 ‘Swarvna Karnataka’ roads for prosperity. (The road signs on the SH17 are quite interesting stating Welcome to Silk city - Ramangara, Sugar city – Mandya…..)The drive from Gundalpet to Bandipur starts giving you a feel of the jungle terrain.

We entered a new world beyond the Bandipur checkpost. The climate suddenly changed and all the road signs stating Wildlife ahead, Wildlife has the right of way’, Wildlife passing area and so on.. adds to the feel of entering the jungle. Though we were on total watch out only Monkeys, Langurs were there to welcome us. Beware of the solar electrical fencing which is there in all the resorts all the way.

We chose to stay @ the ‘Machan’ which is a watch tower, a secluded building facing the jungle in the ‘Foresthills’ resort, Masinagudi. (http://www.foresthills-resort.com/)

We took an evening drive until the Masinagudi checkpost and were instructed to come back before 8pm. The timings are from 6am to 8pm to drive in the main road until the checkpost. No horns, no music, no street lights, no high beams, no human and all you get to see is complete darkness, shrubs and trees which are so still as if they are expecting orders from someone and the preceding jeeps suddenly stop spotting something into the dark. The feel of it makes countless butterflies fly in your stomach and the mind becomes frozen filled with an unknown fear. There was a jeep which stopped before our car and they said they spotted 4-6 wild bisons. However we didn’t have the ‘jungle eyes’ yet and all trees looked like elephants but couldn’t look for the real bisons.

Nights are so scary in the jungle. I wondered what was that I was scared of. The wild elephants, snakes, darkness, the sound or is it the feeling that something would happen?

As the tuskers and bisons might walk in during the night, the resort staff advised us not to park the car near our room. Once we were dropped in our rooms we were not supposed to come down until the next morning. Mani who dropped us in our room (by walk with a torchlight as the armor) suddenly stopped and said he could smell the elephants and vouched they will definitely come during the night. Needless to say, it made me run to the room.

Being more civilized, looks like we have lost the sharpness and intensity of our senses. The localites there could say which animal has passed by with their smell. Even a small kid could spot and elephant among the trees which I had too see through my zoomed lens. Though I wouldn’t blame on my cold for not getting the smell of animals, I really felt sorry for not having have that instinct.

The Mudumalai forest department offers a jeep safari from 7-9am and 3-6pm. The safari is a very short one of 10 kms and you must be extremely lucky enough to spot tigers or panthers. The jeep driver said that the first trips @ 7am,3pm and the last trip are the best ones. We got to see a calf and its mother elephant and lots and lots of deer. An elephant camp @ Theppakaddu has some feeding camps everyday for the tamed elephants. They have a 2year old naughty kid, called Masini. They had rescued the calf from the jungle whose mother passed away.

We were very lucky to join a ‘trio’ from Chennai who had obtained special permission to drive into the jungle. They had a friend who is an elephant researcher and been a forest ranger. We hired a local jeep and set towards ‘Congress mattam’ a restricted area. The history behind the place is that Gandhiji and his team had held meetings here and you could see the ‘Congress Flag’ flying high when you climb up. We reached the forest checkpost @ 5pm and the Ranger added to the thrill saying that we need to return before 6pm as the wildlife movement will be at its peak during that time. We heard that they had spotted 5 to 6 tigers in the last few weeks. We agreed to his terms and got the time extended until 7pm.

We traveled until a small village called ‘Aanaikatti’ where the tribals live. At the end of the village is a small wired gate which reminded me the gates of ‘Jurassic Park’. The bent and broken wires of the gate told us lot of untold stories and pumped up the adrenaline. After the gate we were no more in this world. ‘No turning back’ was the most we experienced. Everytime we turned back to see the path we came by, we witnessed rapidly varying landscape. In one turn it was all bushes, no roads, rivers, thick shrubs, flat grounds of dried shrubs, rocks, centuries old tribal temples and on.

Deers and bisons were on the way. Though it was a rough road and not a proper way. Have it not been for the experienced jeep driver we would definitely fallen into the trees and into the mouth of leopards or elephants. The changing sky from blue to red to grey to black did its own part to add to the thrill. The jeep slowed and there it was a herd of elephants walking back to their homes. Having been used to tamed elephants, the sight of herd of brown elephants (yes they are brown, covered with sand) doesn’t scare you. The moment one of them turns back and stares at us, our heart comes to the mouth.

All the way up we were begging the driver we will turn back as the jungle gets dark very soon and we do not even know how to run away if attacked. The jeep driver Sasi didn’t want us to miss the experience until we reached our destination. When there is a fear mounting up we talk all stories to hide it. We heard all elephant stories that the ‘loners’, the single male elephants are like adolescent men. They are the most troublesome, playful and ferocious guys. The lifestyle of elephants is in many aspects similar to us. In a family if there is a female calf and a male calf the mother will drive away the male kid when it turns to adolescent age. This is to avoid the male mating with its own blood relation. So that is the story of the ‘loner’ elephants which roam around until it finds its match. On a way back we saw an elephant family crossing our jeep by few meters. The enjoyment was filled with a rush of fear when the driver saw thru the rear view mirror, a huge loner tusker turning in the direction of the jeep. Only seconds back we got to know that the maximum speed the jeep can go on a rugged road was 15 km/hr whereas an elephant can run 30-35km/hr. A lifetime experience it was with all crazy thoughts and strategies running through the mind @ lightning speed when enjoying the thrill.

The long day packed with thrill and experience ended with a drink beside the campfire. The absolute silence, calm breeze, sounds of the jungle, ’I’m still alive’ feeling, campfire, a drink, barbeque vegetables, wildlife stories can anything be better than this ?

Next morning was scheduled for a different experience, a trek into the jungle along the trails of elephants, leopards, bisons, panthers, bears, wild boars and deer. The trek guides Ravi and Basavaraj were quite experienced and didn’t miss to show us the footprints of leopards the marking of leopard claws on the trees, droppings of bear and panther, the wild fruits which are food to bear and we even got to taste the fruit of cactus ‘Kalli pazham’ which the peacocks eat. It tasted like watermelon and custard apple. We trekked on the elephant and tiger trail until the ‘tiger rock’’ which is the resting place of tigers. High up the hills with a breath taking view, will the tigers rest here to mediate? On our way back we passed by the waterfalls and never the chill water has tasted so heavenly.

After the adventurous safari and trek, we opted for a low-profile plan to drive up to Ooty which is 30 kms from Masinagudi. Along the 36 hairpin bends and the untouched nature the drive was so pleasant. On our way back we chose the Ooty-Gudalur route which was scenic with tall eucalyptus trees and the sunset among the mountains and trees was fantastic!

On our back unexpectedly we spotted a family of 3 elephants, looked like brothers and sisters with a very small baby elephant. It was quite dark and being in the jungle for 3 days our senses have sharpened enough to spot the brown beasts in the dark night. The sense of joy and accomplishment was suddenly replaced by the thought that the parents of the family must be very close by hiding in the shrubs.

The last aday morning was a totally relaxed to sit out of the room with a book, cool breeze, butterflies, colorful birds and their chirping, bees.

The staffs in the resort Radha, Mani, Kumar, Basavaraj and the resort owner Rahul are extremely friendly. The home made food for your taste buds are real treat. My favorite on the menu was Radha’s barbeque vegetables. (RadhaKrishnan is a caretaker/manager in the forest hills)

Holidays transform us in to a totally new world and as all other holidays I never wanted this one to end too!
